Candler – Ruby Bivens Buchanan, 92, entered Heaven's gates on December 12, 2013 to be reunited with her husband of 64 years, Lee H. Buchanan, who passed in 2004, and her son, Billy Buchanan.

Mrs. Buchanan was the daughter of the late John R. and Cynthia McMahan Bivens. She was also preceded in death by son-in-law, Craig Roberts; sister, Doris Raper and brothers, Clarence, Baxter and Lamar Bivens.

A native of Swain County, she had resided in Buncombe County since 1947. She retired from American Enka Corp. in 1975 following 29 years of service. Mrs. Buchanan was a member of Hominy Baptist Church. For many years she delivered meals on wheels and volunteered with ABCCM.

Surviving are her daughters, Phyllis Roberts of Asheville and Doris Anne Buchanan of Candler as well as daughter-in-law, Shirley Buchanan of Louisville, KY. Mrs. Buchanan is also survived by grandchildren, Michael Roberts and wife Janis of FL; Sharon Kitchin and husband Gregg of Louisville, KY and Michele Capel and husband Joe of Candler. In addition, she leaves great grandchildren, Breanna Capel, Jackson Kitchin, Sydney Roberts and Rachel Kitchin. She also leaves behind brother, Claude Bivens and wife Carole of Asheville and several nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Buchanan is also survived by extended family members, Polly Bryson of Asheville and Jay, Kathleen and Charlotte Tyler of IN.

A private celebration of her life was held Saturday, December 14, 2013 with Rev. Dr. Joe Yelton officiating. Burial was in Pisgah View Memorial Park.
