Clarence was the son of John R. and Cynthia McMahan Bivins of Tennessee and North Carolina. His maternal grandparents were John and Nancy Birchfield McMahan. He moved to California while he was young, and lived at Lake Elsinore from 1935 to 1993, then moved to the Irvine area.
