Dale Hilton West, age 88, of Provo, Utah, died January 29, 2007, after a brief stay in the hospital. Dad was born March 6, 1918 in Provo to John Everett and Ethel Hilton West, losing his father eight months later to the WWI flu. On April 25, 1941 he married Mariam Adamson in the Salt Lake Temple. She preceded him in death on July 21, 1999.
A graduate of Pleasant Grove High School, he earned a bachelor's degree in English at Brigham Young University, a master's degree at the University of Southern California, and a doctorate at the University of Colorado.
He began his teaching career at Monroe, Utah then at Provo before and after his tour of duty in WWII with the 13th Army Air Corps in the South Pacific. Joining the BYU English Department in 1947, he taught there until his retirement in 1983. A member of many University committees, he served as chairman of his department for several years and guided the establishment of the Composite English major and the English Education program, teaching and supervising hundreds of English teachers. Active in many professional organizations, he was on the University accreditation team, steering committee of the National Council of Teachers of English the Utah Council and others.
As a member of the LDS Church his services included ward clerk at age 18, member of the Sunday School General Board for nine years, member of a bishopric, Sunday School presidency, teacher, and temple service. Survivors are his three children: Jeannine (Ralph) Haymore; Richard H. (Melanie) West; Katharine (Lynn) Hansen; twelve grandchildren. He has nineteen great-grandchildren with the twentieth to be born in April. Survived by sisters-in-law Betty West, Anna Adamson, Janice Adamson, Virginia Ault; Brothers-in-law Leo Ault and Keith Brown. He was preceded in death by brothers E. Eugene, J. Everett and sister Gwyn Larsen.
Funeral services will be on Friday, February 2, 2007 at 11:00 a.m. in the Oak Hills 7th Ward Chapel, 1038 North 1200 East, Provo. Friends may call at the Berg Mortuary of Provo, 185 East Center Street, Thursday evening, from 6-8 p.m., or Friday morning, at the Ward Chapel, one hour prior to services.
