Thomas was born in May 31, 1856 in Cruden, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the illegitimate son of Alexander Sangster Shewan (1826? - 1875) and Margaret Mitchell (b. 1832). As Alexander had nine children by his wife, Catherine Mark (1832 - 1903), Thomas had nine half-siblings.

Thomas was originally named Thomas Mitchell, taking his mother's surname. At age 10, Alexander Shewan declared his paternity of Thomas and his birth record was amended to record Alexander as the father. Thomas then took the Shewan surname, which he kept for the rest of his life and gave to his children.

In 1871 Thomas was employed as a farm servant in Upper Broggan, Aberdeenshire. In 1881 he was a farm hand employed by James H. Harvey.

On Oct 8, 1887 Thomas married Isabella Craighead (1869 - 1919) in Cruden. They had twelve children:

* Maggie Ann Shewan (b/d. 1888)
* Isabella Shewan Milne (1889 - 19__)
* Thomas Shewan (1891 - 1916)
* Elizabeth Violet Shewan (b/d. 1894)
* George T. Shewan (1896 - 1965)
* Jessie Shewan Munro (1898 - 19__)
* Agnes Shewan (1900 - 1945)
* John David Shewan (1903 - 1966)
* William James Shewan (1905 - 19__)
* Christina Helen Shewan (1906 - 1920)
* Charles A. Shewan (1909 - 1995)
* Harvey Stewart Shewan (1911 - 1994)

Thomas died Apr 27, 1932. At the time of his death, he was living in Hatton Village, Cruden, near Peterhead. He was 75 years old. The informant was his son, George Shewan.
