Charles was born in Hatton, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, the son of Thomas Mitchell Shewan (1856 - 1932) and Isabella Craighead (1869 - 1919). He married Elsie Kemp Hutton (1907 - 1998). They had five children.

Charles served in the Royal Air Force during World War II. He emigrated to Canada after the War. He was a member of the Oshawa, Ontario Legion Branch.

Charles and Elsie share the same headstone. Nearby their grave is the grave of Hilda Douglas Shewan (d. 2001), their daughter-in-law, wife of their son, Charles Alexander Shewan (1928 - 2009).

Charles and Elsie are buried in the Last Supper Garden section, south west of the wall dividing the 'Christ the Redeemer Garden' and 'The Last Supper Garden.'
