Married Naamah (Naomi) van Gilder, 5 May 1789, in Cape May, New Jersey. There were two sons born to the marriage, James Mickel, Jr., and Robert Mickel. James Sr., died when the children were young and his wife married Benajah Tomlin.
James Mickel, Sr., was employed by Jacob Spicer in 1760, to work on land as well as sea and was to have "20 pounds sterling for a years work." Robert Mickel died young and was unmarried. His brother James inherited his estate.
