Hanna Rion's parents were James Henry Rion and Mary Catherine Weir. An American by birth, Hanna was atypical of the "southern belle" image we would expect from a woman born into a family of a Colonel in the CSA who fought at Fort Sumter. Hanna attended the College for Women in Columbia, SC but ran away and married her piano teacher Winfield Veazy Abell. Their daughter was the artist Theresa Rion Abell. They eventually split up and she married Leroy Williams. He either died or they were divorced and her third marriage was to artist and illustrator Frank (William Francis) VerBeck with whom she came to St. Ives England in 1913. She was a St Ives Arts Club member from 1914-15, and illustrated some of Frank's children's books as well as writing books and painting. Hanna was divorced from Frank and was then a special writer on Lord Northcliffe's Weekly Dispatch. In 1916, she wrote a book on anesthesia in obstetrics entitled "Golden Motherhood", and in 1917 she was appointed matron of a maternity hospital in London, having been instrumental in establishing eleven maternity hospitals in England. Besides being an accomplished artist, she played piano, was fluent in German, translated a number of books and was an avid gardener.

In the June 4th 1921 edition of The New York Times, there was an article which announced that Hanna Rion, age 45 had married Rev. Dr. Hervey, age 82 the former President of St. Lawrence University. This was her final marriage. They moved to Bermuda and lived at "The Cocoon" in Warwick. She died four years later in Bermuda.
