John Thompson Senior along with his brother James, both list themselves as being born in Delaware during the time of the American Revolution. They are both interred here, at the Thompson Cemetery, after becoming the Patriarchs of the Thompson Family in and around Fredericksburg, Ohio. All of the headstones within the Thompson Cemetery are in some way related to these two original pioneers.

John Thompson purchased the land upon which the Thompson Cemetery sits as part of a 1,500 acre land grant from President Monroe. Land grants of this size were often given to officers who served in the American Revolution or War of 1812. It is suspected but not yet proven that prior to this John resided somewhere in Pennsylvania. There are small traces of him and his wife Hiley at the New Presbyterian Church, New Lisbon, Columbiana County, Ohio around 1807. The minister of that church, Reverand Vallandingham, came from Cannonsburg, Washington County, Pennsyvania. Hiley's brothers were in Washington, Greene and Fayette County Pennsylvania at this same time.

John Thompson's grave site used to be adorned with a War of 1812 marker. That grave marker is now beside his son John Thompson Junior's grave in Fredericksburg East Cemetery.

John Thompson married Hiley Dorland sometime around 1798. Hiley Dorland (1778-1864) was the daughter of Lucas and Eleanor Dorland. The Dorland's are all direct descendants of the original settlers of New York City (New Amsterfoort). Their arrival in New York was around 1620, the same time as the Pilgrims.

John and Hiley had 13 children. The dates of birth on the earliest children are estimates; Elizabeth (Poulson) (1800-1867), James (1802-1871), Hannah (Cross/Kraus)(1803-1867), Mary (1803-1822), William (1803-1867), Sarah Anna (Cross/Kraus) (1806-1849), Sarah (Reaser) (1808-1884), John Jr. (1812-1884), Rezin (1815-1858), Joseph (1818-1863), Cornelius (1820-1820), Harriet (Martin) (1821-1869) and Eleanor (Goodin) Thompson (1823-1850).
