William Hiram "Bro. Bill" Swartz, age 88, died Thursday, November 21, 2013, at Windsor Place Nursing & Rehab Center in Columbus. Services will be held Monday, November 25, 2013, at 11:00 AM at Memorial Funeral Home Chapel with Reverend Christopher Oliver, pastor of Ethelsville Church of God officiating. Burial with military honors, will follow at Friendship Cemetery. Visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home Sunday, November 24, 2013, from 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM. Bro. Bill was born on Saturday, December 13, 1924, in Pickens County, AL to the late Hiram and Gertrude Land Swartz. He was a member of the United Christian Church and Ministerial Association, Cleveland, TN and a U.S. Army WWII Veteran. He was a retired employee of Four County Electric after 36 years, as a lineman and technician. Above all he loved to preach, and became a minister at about 20 years old. He started a Church of God in Ethelsville, AL, and later took a church in Shuqualak, MS. All together he preached over 50 years. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers, Albert and Charles; and his son-in-law, George Palms. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mildred Swartz, Columbus, MS; daughters, Hilda Palms, Goose Creek, SC, Ruth Helen Gray (Alton), Columbus, MS and Mary E. Reynolds (Mark), Columbus, MS; sister, Juanita Denton, Columbus, MS; brothers, Carl Swartz, Columbus, MS and Selvin Swartz (Mary Ellen), Columbus, MS; grandchildren, David Palms (Susan) and Cynthia Palms; and great-grandchild, Travis Elloitt Palms.
