Elmer Arthur "Art" Whitman was born August 11, 1873 in Cannonsburg, Kent County, Michigan- the son of Reverend Barnabus H. and Mary Jane Wells Whitman. On October 22, 1898 he married Miss. Daisy U. Ackert in Hayes Township, Charlevoix County, Michigan. Daisy was the daughter of Peter and Abby Foot Ackert. Their first child, Marion A. Whitman was born on October 27, 1899 while they were yet residing in Hayes Township in Charlevoix County, Michigan. Sadly, their second children, born in 1902, lived only a few, short hours. However, the difficult birth brought on Daisy's death two days later, on September 22, 1902.

Art Whitman married his second wife, Evelyn J. "Eva" Fulmer on December 29,1903 in Gaylord, Otsego County, Michigan. Eva was the daughter of George and Elizabeth Bell Fulmer. Art and Eva went on to have five more children as follows:

Art Whitman died in Flint, Genesee County, Michigan on September 6, 1961. His wife, Eva, would remain a widow until November 23, 1967 when she also died in Flint, Michigan.

WHITMAN- Elmer A. Whitman, 919 Gladwyn, age 88, died Wednesday, September 6, 1961, at Hurley Hospital. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Saturday, September 9, 1961 from the Reigle Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 4305 Clio Road, at Stewart Drive. E.H. Longman officiating. Burial in Flint Memorial Park Cemetery. Mr. Whitman will remain at the funeral home.

He was born in Alaska Township, Michigan August 11, 1873. He was a member of UAW 659, The Retirees Club, being the oldest retired member at the McKinley Senior Citizens Club. Mr. Whitman was employed at Chevrolet Manufacturing for 36 years, retiring in 1950. He was the first member to retire on GM-UAW Pension Plan, UAW Local 659. Surviving are: Wife, Evelyn of Flint; three sons, Charles, Arthur and Guy of Swartz Creek; three daughters, Mrs. Marion Townsend of Oakland, California; Mrs. Marjorie Knopf of Flint; and Mrs. Rose Mackey of Detroit; 20 grandchildren; 19 greatgrandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren.

SERVICES SATURDAY FOR ONE OF FIRST RETIREES AT GM

Services for Elmer A. Whitman, 88, of 919 Gladwyn Street, one of the first General Motors workers to retire under the corporation's pension plan, will be at 1 PM Saturday in the Reigle Funeral Home, 4305 Clio Road.

Burial will be in Flint Memorial Park. He died Wednesday in Hurley Hospital.

Mr. Whitman worked at the Chevrolet Manufacturing Plant for 36 years and retired in 1950, when a pension system for GM hourly workers became effective.

He was the oldest member of the retirees club of Chevrolet Local 659, United Auto Workers, and also was a member of the McKinley Senior Citizens Club.

Besides his wife, Evelyn, he leaves three daughters, one of whom, Mrs. Marjorie Knopf, lives in Flint; three sons, Charles, Arthur and Guy, all of Swartz Creek; 20 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
