She grew up in West Hartford, graduating from Hall High in 1945. Following high school, Lu attended the Ona M. Wilcox College of Nursing at Middlesex Hospital and became a Registered Nurse. She worked at Middlesex Hospital and at the Newington Children's Hospital .
In 1950 she married Clifford R. Maynard of Wethersfield. Lu was an active member of the Wethersfield community and of her church, Trinity Episcopal Church. She served many years on the Wethersfield Board of Education, on the Republican Town Committee and on the Vestry at Trinity Church. For many years she co-chaired the annual Old Wethersfield Antiques Show.
Many in Wethersfield will remember Lu for the help she provided in vacation and trip planning during the many years she worked in local travel agencies, including Bon Voyage and Wethersfield Travel.
Lu loved playing bridge and was a member of several local bridge groups over the years. She enjoyed tennis - playing it in her younger years and following the tournaments and tennis celebrities in her later years. She enjoyed needlework and knitting and made many baby blankets which she donated to newborn programs. Lu was a life-time learner, taking college classes and travel seminars after she retired. She delighted in spending time with her beloved granddaughters as they did with her. She taught them to be good card players and how to make favorite family recipes.
Lu is survived by her children, Deborah, Marcia and her husband, Ken Denton, C. Robert Maynard and his partner, Deb Ravenelle; her sister and brother-in-law, Elissa (Lundberg) and Ronald Schumann of Wethersfield; her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Shirley (Maynard) and George Beisel of Rocky Hill; her granddaughters, Elissa, Katie and Ellie Denton; her niece Cynthia (Schumann) Rier; and nephews Jeffrey Schumann, Bill Schumann, Bob Beisel and Craig Beisel. She was predeceased by her husband and her parents.
A Memorial Service will be held on December 29 at 11 a.m. At Trinity Episcopal Church, 300 Main Street in Old Wethersfield, with a simple reception to follow.
