Daughter of John H. "Homer" Gartrell and Ella Bates.

Ethel was married three times: (1) July 7, 1917 to William Kilgore, of Cedars (Pocola), LeFlore Co., OK; (2) Sept. 1, 1919 to George W. Edgin, of Ozark, Franklin Co., AR; (3) Oct. 20, 1923 to Ben Samples (He was age 40 and she was 25) both where then living in South Fort Smith, AR.

She had two children by Mr. Edgin. Vergie Anita and Dorothy who died while she was living in Fort Smith taking care of her mother Ella who had cancer.

By her third marriage to A. B. Samples she had Irene, Eva Lee, Pattie Lou and a baby boy who died in 1931 at Terre Haute, IN where the family resided one year in seek of work. They came to Oklahoma City "when Pat was three years old".

Ben and Ethel separated and were divorced in 1941.
