Sampson served as a Private in Co. A, 146th Indiana Infantry during the Civil War. He mustered in 8 Feb 1865, out 31 Aug 1865 in Baltimore MD. There are multiple articles in the Columbus newspapers in the 1887-1895 time period about whether Sampson was insane (or just quirky) and who would get his pension.
