The year is about 1881 in Ashland, Ohio.
GEORGE MICHAEL KNAPP and ANN SARAH "SADIE" DOWNS. Sadie was only four feet, eleven as can be seen by the attached photo.

Grandmother Knapp

"If I danced for the ship's captain he would give me bread without 'wiggles'," explained Grandma Knapp as she was recounting her voyage to the United States. (In case you haven't guessed, she meant worms.) She and her family sailed from England on April 18, 1870 on the CONSTANTINE.

Ann Sara Hayes Downs lived at Angel Place, Black Friar's Court, Dog's Island, London, England. This was an estuary that extended out into the Thames, but no longer exists. An older brother of her father had emigrated to Shelby, Ohio and the family followed later, settling in Ashland. A six-week journey on the sailing vessel CONSTANTINE must have been a real adventure. Each family provided its own provisions and food for the long journey, so whenever the captain asked young Sadie to sing English ballads for her and to dance jigs, it broght great joy to the family.

In her late teens she met a handsome young man, a German lad, who lived in Orange (Nankin)., and she became Mrs. George Michael Knapp. Mike was a cooper, a trade that made barrels, kegs, etc. One of my prized possessions is a small wooden container (bucket with a lid) for sugar that he made for her during their courting days. It has three metal strips around it, each a different kind of metal.

Their first child was christened Magdalena, then came Floyd, and their third child was my mother, Bertha. Two more girls, Lucy and Lelia, completed the family.
