"Patriarch Frederick Olsen one of Ferron's oldest and most useful citizens, peacefully passed away at his home in Ferron at 6:30 on Tuesday morning of this week. At his bedside at the time of his death were his sons Lewis, Livy, and Fred. Patriarch Olsen was 81 years of age on July 27th last. He was born in Denmark in 1824. In 1852 he became a Mormon and came to America in the fall of "57" joining Christensen's handcart company and walking 1300 miles across the plains. He first located at Ephraim went to Moroni, thence to Spring City and in 1866 to Monroe where he was driven out by Indians. He took a prominent part in the Black Hawk War and was in several fierce engagements. He was bishop of Monroe in 1866 and ordained bishop of Spring City in 1868. In October 1882 he settled in Ferron and was the first bishop of that town. In 1848 he married Mary Justensen to whom 10 children were born and of whom Ole, Livy, Andrew, and Frederick survive. He married Matilda Jensen in 1869 and of their five children Louis, James F. and Allen D. Olsen and Mrs. G. A. Iverson and Mrs. Joseph Hansen survive. Both wives have been dead for several years. All his children live in Emery County except Mrs. Iverson who is living with her husband, G. A. Iverson in Ann Arbor Mich., Mrs. Joseph Hansen who lives in Ephraim, Allen D. who lives in Butte Mont., and Andrew who is at present in Alberta, Canada. Some ten years ago the deceased retired from the Ferron Bishopric and was ordained a patriarch. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon. The meeting house was scanty large enough to contain all those who came out to pay their last tribute of respect to a man who had always been a splendid citizen, neighbor and friend. The speakers: Bishop Killpack, Bishop H.P. Rasmussen of Molen, John L. Allred, and Peter R. Petersen, each spoke in warm praise of the deceased's striking manly qualities. A large procession followed the remains to the cemetery."
(The birthday on Frederick's tombstone says the 26th of July but The Lutheran Church records prove different. Frederick's birth place was on a farm in the Kyndby parish, Fredericksborg County, Denmark, (GS film 48717 book 7, page 18, Entry no.1) on the 27th of July, 1824. He was christened the same day in the Lutheran Church.)
