A 13-year-old Jenifer Junior High School students were fatally injured yesterday in one of three separate sledding accidents on ice-glazed Fenton Park. Dead is Larry L. Jones, Son of Mrs. Betty Jo Roos, 915 17th Ave., whose sled struck the largest of hundreds of trees on the steep slope of the park near a sign that reads "Welcome to Fenton Park."
Lewiston ambulance attendants Marion Smith and Steven Crawford said the youth was still wrapped around the tree when they arrived. He complained of pains in his abdomen and that he was unable to see. He was bleeding from a cut on the forehead.
Larry was admitted to the hospital at 12:20 p.m. and died 35 minutes later, apparently of head injuries, the attending physician said. He also was suffering from deep shock. No autopsy will be made.
Ironically, within a 15-minute span three sledders of the dozen coasting in the park collided with trees.
Jones was born at Clarkston Oct. 3, 1951. He was an eighth-grade student at Jenifer Jr. High in Lewiston.
Survivors besides his mother include his father, Loren Jones, address unknown; his maternal grandmother, Mrs. George Christiansen, 1602, 9th Ave., with whom he had been staying while his mother was moving; a brother, Eric Lee, 9; sister, Joanna Rae, 7; and his paternal grandmother, Mrs. Beulah Jones of Lewiston.
