OBITUARY-
Cora Braaten, 91, of Austin, died Friday, Oct. 07, 2005 at St. Mark’s Lutheran Home.
She was born June 28, 1914 in Austin, Minn. to Arnie and Emma (Matheson) Ranum.
Cora attended Austin Public Schools and was married to Henry E. Braaten on Sept. 2, 1939 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church in Austin. She worked for the Hormel Company. They resided in Austin until 1945 when they moved to a farm in the Austin area where she lived for the next 50 years. Later in life, Cora worked in the kitchen at St. Olaf Hospital in Austin. The Braatens enjoyed spending summers at their cabin near Faribault and spent several winters in the Mesa, Ariz. area.
Cora was an excellent cook and enjoyed canning the produce from the summer's garden. She also liked the hours spent mowing the lawn, and in her free time she liked playing cards and doing word find puzzles. She loved spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Henry E. Braaten, brothers and sisters.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, Oct. 11, 2005 at 1:30 p.m. at Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church with The Rev. Bruce Falksen officiating. Interment will be in the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Cemetery, rural Austin. Visitation will be held at the Clasen-Jordan Mortuary on Monday from 4 to 7 p.m. and on Tuesday at the church for one hour before the service. The family prefers memorials to the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church Building Fund.
The organist will be Shirley Cahill.
The soloist will be Erin Schumacher.
Casket bearers are Candace Groenke, Patrice Meger, Christopher Modene, Jennifer Braaten, Gregg Braaten and Wayne Thompson.
Cora is survived by: son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Elaine Braaten of Austin, Minn.; daughter and son-in-law, Sandra and Randy Modene of Maple Grove, Minn.; grandchildren, Candace Groenke of Gurnee, Ill., Patrice Meger of Stillwater, Minn., Christopher Modene of Maple Grove, Minn., Jennifer Braaten of Cozumel, Mexico, and Gregg Braaten of Austin, Minn.; nine great-grandchildren; sister, Melda Gemmel of Austin, Minn.; sister-in-law, Janeth Ranum of Austin, Minn.; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, George and Edna Braaten of Austin, Minn., Sylvester and Bernice Thompson of Austin, Minn., Floyd and Ann Hemenway of Missoula, Mont., and Arley and Netta Hutson of Austin, Minn.; nieces and nephews.
