Justina Elizabeth (Helman) Spangler Southerly of Providence Place in Chambersburg & formerly of Waynesboro passed away on Wednesday, October 23, 2013. She had been in failing health and critically ill for the past 10 days.

Justina was born in Waynesboro on July 12, 1930 the daughter of Archie F. Helman and Nettie Kathryn (Harty) Helman.

Justina married Harry Dixon Spangler, Jr. on July 6, 1950 and built their first home together on Walnut Street where they raised their children. Family was very important to Justina and she loved hosting large family gatherings in her home.

Her beloved husband Harry passed away on December 15, 1980 after a tragic accident.

On May 23, 1987 Justina married Wade "Harvey" Southerly at the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren.

Justina will be remembered for her love of sewing, quilting and making crafts. She shared her creative talents with other residents at Providence Place for the past 12 years while residing there.

She was intrigued by her family genealogy and compiled 3 publications on her families: Helman, Sheffler & Spangler. From her dedication and endless research she was very proud to have been a published author.

Above all her children were her life and she celebrated the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren with much joy.

Justina is survived and will be deeply missed by her grateful daughter, Diane Kelley & husband Keith Kelley of Gales Ferry, Connecticut and her son Gregory Spangler & wife Susie Sollenberger Spangler of Tucson, Arizona. She will be deeply missed by her granddaughters Heather Ranalli-Bullock, Meghan Elizabeth Kelley and Gretchen Diane Kelley, her step granddaughter Karen Spangler Knepper & step grandson David Spangler; 6 great grandchildren Joseph, Christian, Gavin, Ian, Madelyn Elizabeth & Mackenzie; 2 step great grandchildren Andrew and Colleen and 1 great-great step granddaughter Catarina. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and close relative Lois Byers.

Justina was predeceased by her parents, her sisters Betty Helman, Colleen Helman Shockey, Delores Helman Brewer and her brother Lemar Helman and her stepson Barry Dixon Spangler.

She was a member of the Waynesboro and Chambersburg Church of the Brethren and for many years was a Christian Homebuilders Sunday School teacher and summer bible school teacher, Brethren Women's Guild & active participate in the Loving Hearts.

Services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Tuesday, October 29, 2013 in the Waynesboro Church of the Brethren, 117 South Church St., Waynesboro, with Pastor Daniel House and Pastor Darlene Stouffer officiating. Burial will follow in Green Hill Cemetery, Waynesboro.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M., Monday evening, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 S. Broad St., Waynesboro.
