He married Jane Hudspeth on April 6, 1827 at Greene County, Kentucky. To this union nine children were born.
On April 27, 1838, Joel and his family headed to Missouri. Joel was the first Judge of Nodaway County, Missouri.
The family moved to California in 1859, traveling by wagon train. He wife passed away shortly after arriving.
Joel married his second wife, Ruth Maddox on Dec. 9, 1861 in Visalia, California. Ruth was the widow of Henry Hyatt Enlow.
Joel passed away on June 12, 1874, and was buried at the Old Fort Miller Cemetery at Millerton, California. In 1942, the Friant Dam was constructed on the San Joaquin River near the town of Friant, California. The dam created the Millerton Lake. The lake bed was the site of the town of Millerton and the Old Fort Miller Cemetery. All headstones were gone by this time, so no graves were moved prior to the construction of the dam. There is a memorial stone located at the Academy Cemetery at Clovis, California to honor Joel and his wife Jane.
