Jake was born to Louis and Lizzie Alsdorf as their 2nd child. His father supported the family by working as a boilermaker for the railroad and as a laborer for an iron foundry.

Jake never married and lived with his parents for a number of years. His mother died in 1925. In 1930, he was living in Kansas City, Kansas and was working in a packing house.

In later years, Jake moved to Arkansas when he retired, and died there in 1960. His nephew, Fred Marks Alsdorf, went to Arkansas and took care of the final arrangements to have his remains shipped back to Topeka to be buried with his other family members.
