Ed was born to Louis and Elizabeth Alsdorf in Topeka, Kansas. He had 2 brothers and 1 sister: Frederick Louis (1884-1977), Jacob Arnold (1886-1960) and Kathrine Alsdorf Zarse (1890-1972).

In 1910, Ed was working as a stenographer for the railroad in Newton, Kansas. While there, he married Phoebe Thomas and had a daughter, Lucille, in 1916. Two years later, Phoebe died, leaving him a widower with a small child.

In 1920, Ed and little Lucille were living in Winslow, Arizona while he was working as a car distributor for the Santa Fe Railroad. He was remarried that same year to Marguerite. They had two more daughters while living there in Arizona in the 1920s: Florence and Barbara.

The family moved to National City, California where Ed worked as a chief clerk for the Santa Fe Railroad, retiring in 1959. Ed was made an Honorary Member of the City Council and the County Board of Supervisors for his uninterrupted attendance of their meetings for many years.

Ed was an active member of the Gideon Society, a 50-year member of the First United Methodist Church and the treasurer of the Travelers' Aid Society for 19 years. At the time of his death, he had 10 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren.
