Marion is the son of William Franklin Davis and Ella Salina Rodgers McCuen. He is a brother to William Franklin Davis, Jr and Margo Davis. He is a half-brother to Georgeanne, Irena and Gambrell Franklin Davis through his father's first wife and a half-brother to Roy Leslie, Boyce Harold, Ralph and Jesse Vasco McCuen through his mother's first husband. He is also a half-brother to Lois Christine "Davis" Darnell through his mother's relationship with an unidentified man after the death of her first husband.
Marion married Mary Brissey. They are the parents of Mary Ann Davis Danieley.

He was a former president of North Carolina and South Carolina Numismatic Association and American Numismatic Association. Mr. Davis was a charter member and former treasurer of Easley Baptist Hospital Foundation Board. He was a member of the Tri-County Technical College Foundation Board. He also served on the Electrical Board of the City of Easley.
