As a young man, he found work on Amherst Island as a sailor on the Great Lakes. He married Selina Curran in 1861, and was the father of nine children:
Elizabeth Jane, Mary, Agnes, John H., James, Archibald, Sarah, Victor and J. Selina "Sue" Cochrane.
John left Amherst Island in 1866 and immigrated to Chicago, where he continued sailing.
