Elizabeth Viola Eugenia Smith was born to Alexander W. Smith and Lou Ella Slaton Smith on April 21, 1887. Family legend reports her birth at Cave Spring, GA, though genealogy research has placed her birth at Rome, GA. She was reared by Christian parents (her father was a minister), and became a very kind and gentle Southern lady. She met Fred Mason Marsh in church, and they married on June 24, 1911 in Atlanta, GA. They had four children: Lorna Doone Marsh (Bone), Willard E. Marsh, Elsie Elizabeth Marsh (Garren), and Millard Mason Marsh. Mr. and Mrs. Marsh lived with their youngest son, Millard, his wife Lola New Marsh, and their three children for most of the married life of the younger Mr. and Mrs. Marsh. The elder Mr. and Mrs. Marsh played an important role in the rearing of their grandchildren.
Mrs. Marsh was a faithful teacher in the Friendly Bible Class at Martha Brown Methodist Church in East Atlanta. She was also a life member of the Women's Society of Christian Service at that church. When she passed away on June 20, 1964, she was survived by her husband, all four children, 12 great-grandchildren, and two sisters. She was buried at Westview Cemetery in Atlanta, GA.
