Helen Clara Berstrom, 85, of Bemidji died Jan. 10, 1997, at North Country Nursing and Rehab Center. Funeral services were at Bethel Lutheran Church of Bemidji. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Northern Township.
She was born June 12, 1911 at Marble, MN, the daughter of Andrew and Clara (Nelson) Norrgard. She attended school at Mahtowa, MN, where she married Harlow Bergstrom July 14, 1932. They lived at Mahtowa, Pine City, Duluth and Funkley before moving in 1947 to Bemidji, where she had lived since. Besides raising her family, she worked at Swedmark's Lodge and the old Bemidji Lutheran Hospital in housekeeping departments. She was also a cook at Northern Elementary School for more than 12 years. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church and its Anna Circle, the quilting group and the home maker group. She enjoyed her family, curling, baking, crocheting, knitting, home remodeling, quilting, hunting and writing poetry.
She is survived by her husband; two daughters, Janet (Kirt) Dreyer of Bemidji: Darlene (Tom) Mathews of Blackduck; three sons, Leroy (Carol) Bergstrom of Cloquet, MN, Rodney (Maria) Bergstrom of Cocoa Beach, FL, Lennard (Marlene) Bergstrom of Bemidji; 17 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Harold (Grace) Norrgard of Cloquet and Kenneth (Mary) Norrgard of Hinckley, MN. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Gordon and Lester; a brother, Lawrence; and a sister, Alice Kauppi.
