Dorothy Mundis Reid, 92, of Gastonia, was a daughter of the late Anna and William Mundis. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert "Bob" Reid and three sisters, Hazel Mundis, Margie McGee and Grace Simonds.
"Dottie" Reid graduated from Pickneyville, Illinois High School, where she met her future husband, Bob Reid. After graduating, she attended Southern Illinois University. She married Bob Reid in 1941 and traveled the United States as a cadet wife while her husband earned his pilot wings and a Lieutenant's commission during World War II. Dottie taught preschool and later became the lead teacher for the War Time Child Care Center of St. Louis, MO. Dottie's husband chose to make the Air Force his career and was transferred frequently about the United States. Dottie was a committed military wife, always ready and able to move her family of five across the country at a moment's notice.
Upon her husband's retirement from the USAF in 1968, Dottie and Bob settled in Gastonia, where they joined First Baptist Church. Dottie faithfully served her Lord and her church as a Sunday School teacher for more than thirty years, and was one of the first women at First Baptist to be elected a deacon. She was a member and officer of the P.E.O. Sisterhood, and was an active volunteer for Crisis Assistance Ministry, Meals on Wheels, and the Literacy Council. A long-time member of Gaston Country Club, she was active in the lady golfers' league, and also an accomplished quilter.
Dottie Reid will be long-remembered as a sweet, kind, caring, unselfish, generous, unflappable lady, the epitome of a loving family matriarch. For 68 years she was the totally devoted wife to her husband. As an understanding mother and grandmother, she provided love, encouragement, and instilled the importance of family values and higher education to facilitate their success.
Interment in Gaston Memorial Park.
