U.S. Congressman. After studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced practice in Mansfield, Ohio. Moving to Iowa, in 1852, he established a law firm in Oskaloosa, Mahaska County. He was a member of the Iowa State Senate, (1857 to 1860) and judge of the sixth judicial circuit of Iowa, (1861 to 1867). In 1867, he was elected as a Republican to the Fortieth and Forty-first Congresses, serving until 1871 and elected to the Forty-third Congress, serving (1873 to 1875). After leaving Congress, he lived in retirement until his death while on visit in Pennsylvania.
