Samuel David Ballou, of Corbin, Whitley Co., KY, went to be with Jesus on Monday, August 15, 2011, at his residence, Corbin, Whitley Co., KY. Sam was born May 15, 1934. His parents were to Raymond Dempsey Ballou and Anna Marie Bogie Ballou of Williamsburg, Whitley Co., KY He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Margaret Susan "Peggy" Beams Ballou; his three brothers: Elbert L Ballou and Norma; Robert Lee Ballou and his wife, Charlotte A Mays; and Donald E Ballou and his wife, Darline E White; his three children: Paula Ann Ballou Johnson and her husband, Bob Johnson; Samuel David Ballou and his wife, Jamie Denise Lynch Ballou; and Susan Ellen Ballou Gibson and her husband, Keith Edward Gibson; his eight grandchildren: Jeanelle Susanne Sears and Jonna Margaret Sears; Dempsey Lawrence Ballou and his wife, Selena; Chelsea Lynae Ballou Salter and her husband, Trey Salter; D'Alice Rhea Ann Ballou, Maggie Michelle Ballou, Grant Gibson and Grace Ellen Gibson.
Dr. Sam was a graduate of the University of Louisville Dental School, Louisville, Jefferson Co., KY He practiced dentistry in Corbin, Whitley Co., KY, from 1958 until retiring in 1998. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Southeastern Kentucky Dental Society for 25 years, and served as President of the Kentucky Dental Association 1996-97.
He became a member of Central Baptist Church, Corbin, Whitley Co., KY, in 1958 and taught an adult men's Sunday School class from 1960 until the present. He served as a deacon of the church and was active on many church committees.
Dr. Sam was a charter member of the Bassin' Baptist Club. He was a Trustee of the University of the Cumberland for 34 years and a 40-year member of the Corbin Lions Club. He served on the Whitley County Board of Health and was an avid fisherman and golfer.
His true calling came in 1995, when he made his first international mission trip to Russia. He served on two mission trips to Ecuador, eight trips to Brazil and one to Alaska. As a member of the Kentucky Baptist Disaster Relief Team, he went on eight disaster relief trips to Louisiana, Florida and Mississippi.
