GHQ, American Expeditionary Forces, Citation Orders No. 2 (June 3, 1919)

CITATION:

By direction of the President, under the provisions of the act of Congress approved July 9, 1918 (Bul. No. 43, W.D., 1918), First Lieutenant (Field Artillery) William F. Hendren, United States Army, is cited by the Commanding General, American Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry in action and a silver star may be placed upon the ribbon of the Victory Medals awarded him. First Lieutenant Hendren distinguished himself by gallantry in action while serving with the 17th Field Artillery Regiment, 2d Division, American Expeditionary Forces, in action near St. Etienne, France, 4 October 1918, in making a reconnaissance while under terrific enemy fire.


Awarded a Citation Certificate for distinguished and exceptional gallantry at Blanc Mont on October 6, 1918


Awarded the Croix de Guerre with palm (France)

He went out on an advanced reconnaissance in spite of the violent enemy artillery bombardments and the fire of machine guns. He continued his reconnaissance and returned only when it was completed,
