The surname for Mungo varies with sources, as either "Ramsay" or "Ramsey".

A search of December 1871 - April 1872 Fairfield Ledger newspaper issues that were microfilmed and those microfilm reels on file at the Fairfield Public Library, no obituary, death notice, or probate filing notice has been found.

This contributor has examined many of the documents in the Jefferson county, Iowa probate box #47 and based on that inspection it appears that the most compelling version is for "Ramsay". Because of the business and real estate holdings Mungo had, his probate file necessitated many court filings by attorneys, creditors, and others who had a claim or interest in the estate. Charles Negus was a prominent attorney at the time who handled many of these filings, and his references as well as 99.9% of the other filings by those who would have known Mungo on a personal basis all use "Ramsay" for the surname. Most of the references to "Ramsey" are tucked in some of the filings on pages that, most likely, were recorded by clerks, but there is one (see photo) from his attending physician that lists the name as "Mungo Ramsey".

Although Mungo's wife's headstone does have her listed as 'wife of Mungo Ramsey', it is quite possible that that was an engraving error not easily corrected without having a whole new headstone engraved at additional cost.

This memorial is being entered as "Mungo Ramsay", but obviously there is room for interpretation.

The probate file had many filings in which the surname was written out in heavy cursive handwriting, but the vast majority of the typewritten documents clearly had the surname as "Ramsay".

While Mungo is most likely buried in this Ramsay/Ramsey family plot, there is no headstone known for him (one could have been lost, taken, or sunk into the ground) and there is only a mention of his death in court filings.

There is ample room beside wife Elizabeth for a coffin for Mungo (Gibson Bros. were the undertakers, per probate filings).

Re: Death Date update a/o August 31, 2015 -

It is presumed that Mungo died in Jefferson county, Iowa. There are no official death records for 1871, however.

Regarding the document photo added to this memorial on August 31, 2015:

Final medical expenses submitted by Dr. P.N. Woods for the month of December, 1871, for "Mungo Ramsey" (a/k/a Mungo Ramsay". From Probate Box 47 in Jefferson County, Iowa, courthouse.

This listing appears to be the only documentation showing the death date to be December 11, 1871. This memorial is now updated accordingly.

According to this medical document, Mungo died at 10 p.m. the night of December 11, 1871.

------------
Married first to Elizabeth E. McCombs Ramsay/Ramsey on August 19, 1847, then remarried to Martha E. Black on September 12, 1865.

------------
Children of Mungo Ramsay and Martha Ellen McCombs Ramsay, listed in part from a 1995 Ramsay family group sheet compiled by a Sara-Jane Ramsay Gilb. The listing is presented here with the caution that not all of these children are accounted for with exact burial locations, or death dates. Use this listing as a starting point, not necessarily a complete listing:

> Clara A Ramsay
> David P. Ramsay
> Mary Ramsay Curfman
> Euphemia (Effie) Ramsay Monfort
> William Ramsay
> Nellie (a/k/a Ellen ??) Ramsay
> Charles E. Ramsay*

* This Charles E Ramsay may actually be the one buried in the Ramsay plot but was a son of John P. Ramsay (Mungo's brother) and Elizabeth M. Bryan Boyd/Ramsay.

----------
At some point, Mungo Ramsay remarried to Martha E. Black Ramsay, who died on August 11, 1910 in Clayton, Michigan. She was with her son, Elbridge G. Ramsay, at the time of her death. Her obituary was published in the Lockridge Herald on Friday, August 12, 1910 but only stated that she was to be buried in Hudson, Michigan, but the name of the cemetery was not named. No F/A/G memorial has been found for her as of November 2013; if and when her burial location and memorial is located/created a link to her would be made.

Children of Mungo Ramsay and Martha E. Black (per Ramsay family group sheet, but these have not been confirmed by this contributor, so use this listing with caution):

> Elbridge G. Ramsay
> Annie Ramsay
> Herbert M. Ramsay
