Walter was a son of Henry V. Baumgardt Sr. and Clara Longe. He had 11 brothers and one sister. He married Ruth E. Bonnett on June 1, 1921 in the parsonage of Salem Reformed Church.
Walter and Ruth had 4 children, William H., T. Michael, Gayle E. and Patricia Anna who passed away in 1924.Walter was a longtime railroad worker who retired in 1967 from the Monon Railroad after 50 years. At the Monon he was a wheel pressman but before that he was a brakeman Lafayette Street Railway.Walter was a lifelong resident of Lafayette and attended St James Lutheran Schools.He was a member of Immanuel United Church of Christ and the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen.
