Nina Apple Wicker, age 84, passed away at her home in Sanford on January 24, 2012 surrounded by her family.

Nina was born on October 31, 1927 in Caswell County. She married Julian Talmadge Wicker in 1951 and moved to Sanford to live and raise her family. She worked part time at Sears, Western Union, and assisted during elections days at the polls.

Nina was a member of the North Carolina Poetry Society and the NC Haiku society. She was listed in 1977 and 1978 in International Who's Who in Poetry. She founded the literary journal, Manna, which she edited and produced from 1980 to 1993.

Nina's poetry has been published in Farm Journal, Inc., The Progressive Farmer, The North Carolina Christian Advocate, Country Living, Pegasus, Pembroke Magazine, The Sanford Herald, Parnassus, Cairn, and Dragonfly. Her work has been included in notable anthologies such as the Haiku Hundred and Haiku Moment.

She has written and published a number of haiku collections, including Ladybug in a Bottle, Winter, and Wild Roses, To Hear His Whisper, Wild Again, Where Pelicans Fly and October Rain on My Window, which dedicated to her husband Talmadge and registered through US Library of Congress.

Nina was an active member of the Lemon Springs United Methodist Church. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women.

Nina is survived by her husband Julian Talmadge Wicker, four children: Julian Turner Wicker and wife Charlene of Sanford, Robert Dale Wicker and wife Karen of Carthage, Wynne Wicker Fields and her husband Charles of Goldston and Mark Allen Wicker and wife Judy of Broadway; grandchildren Adrian S. Wicker, Jill Fields Charville and her husband Adam Charville, Kari J. Wicker, Ashton Wicker Gonella and her husband Michael Gonella, Kelsy L. Wicker, Elizabeth D. Wicker, Taylor E. Wicker, Cameron Fields and Clayton Fields; great-grandchildren Rylan Gonella and Harper Gonella; sister Lela Catherine McKinney and brother George Allen Apple.

Nina is preceded in death by her parents, Robert Elisha Apple and Martha Frances "Pat" Apple and grandson, Andrew Kelly Wicker; siblings Eva McKinney Waynick, Robert L. Apple, Walter Everette Apple, Mary E. Manly, Tommie D. Apple and Tony Apple.

The family will receive friends Thursday, January 26, 2012 from 12:00 to 2:00 PM in the Sanctuary of Lemon Springs United Methodist Church and the funeral will follow at 2:00 PM with Rev. Roberta Byram and Rev. Lisa Cole presiding. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
