Emma Christensen Tharaldson was born 23 Sep 1894 in Odin, Watonwan Co., MN to Hans & Marie (Mathistad) Christensen. The family moved from Fish Lake in 1901 to Northern Minnesota near Wylie, where Emma began school. In 1904 the Christensens came to North Dakota, living near Leal for one year before moving to the Tolstad Farm. NW of Dazey in Barnes Co.
Emma graduated from Dazey High School in 1915. She attended Valley City Normal School the summer after her graduation, for 12 weeks and received her teaching certificate. On 17 Aug 1915 she began teaching at Edna School, So. of Dazey, earning $50. per month. She went to Summer school in 1916/17/18 as well which entitled her to a first grade teaching certificate, or about the equivelant of one and a half years of college. She was confirmed at the Lutheran Church in Dazey, ND. Emma was always the oldest person at the Dazey School Alumni Reunions until her death.
Emma married Emil Denver Tharaldson on 1 Jan 1920 in Rogers, Barnes Co., ND, on her parents farm. He was the son of Daniel Tharaldson and Ingnora Bertine Ovesdatter Lie of Norway. They had 11 children, 9 who lived, twins died in infancy.
Emma had a stroke on 7 Oct 1988 and slipped into a coma. She celebrated her 94th birthday in the hospital in Valley City, ND, with her children and grandchildren in attendance. She was lucid for about an hour of the party. She had been in the hosp. since Sep and died 30 Nov 1988. She was a lifelong member of Our Saviours Lutheran Church in Dazey, and the W.E.L.C. She was a charter member of the Dazey American Legion Auxilliary, the Laketown Homemakers and the Dazey Alumni Assn. Husband Emil had died on 12 May 1954 in Fargo, ND after surgery.
Emma was survived by her children: Howard (Doris) Tharaldson of Portland, OR, Russell (June) Tharaldson of So. St. Paul, MN, Morris (AnnaBelle) Tharaldson of Dazey, ND, Gordon (Delores) Tharaldson of Richland, MN, Phyllis (Edmund) Quick of Dazey, ND, James (Carol) Tharaldson of Bremen, IN, Marilyn (James) Dahl of Dazey, ND, Robert (Geri) Tharaldson of New Brighton, MN, and Richard (Peggy) Tharaldson of So. St. Paul, MN.
She left 35 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren, 3 great-great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, Helmer Christensen of Dazey, ND, and Milton (Doris) Christensen of Puyallup, WA.
Emma was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Emil, two brothers and a sister, a grandson, a granddaughter and one great-grandson.
