Father Hugh Schuck, O.S.B., age 95, a Benedictine monk of Marmion Abbey in Aurora, IL, died Sunday, September 11, 2005, the eve of his 96th birthday. Because of advancing age and problems related to his weakening physical condition, Father had been admitted to Provena Mercy Hospital on Saturday, September 10, 2005. He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry Schuck and Mary Anne Singer Schuck, as well as all of his five siblings. He is survived by several nieces and nephews, as well as by the members of his monastic community of Marmion Abbey.
Father Hugh Schuck was born in Indianapolis, IN on September 12, 1909. He entered St. Meinrad Minor Seminary 82 years earlier on the very date that he died, September 11. He professed vows at St. Meinrad Abbey on August 6, 1929 and was ordained a priest on May 22, 1934. He attended summer classes at DePaul University in Chicago.
During his years in ministry, Fr. Hugh taught many different subjects, especially Physics and Theology. Before coming to Marmion in 1945, he was assigned to parish ministry in Huntingburg, IN. He was a founding member of Marmion Abbey in 1947.
During his years at Marmion Abbey and Marmion Academy, Father was assigned to many different responsibilities. He was the abbey representative during two important construction projects: the abbey building and the new academy buildings on Butterfield Rd. He was in charge of all of the religious ceremonies of the abbey for 21 years. During his active years he was in charge of the mechanical operations of the buildings as well as mechanic for the abbey and academy.
For almost every weekend during his teaching years at Marmion Academy, Father was assigned to help out at St. Mary's Parish in McHenry.
Father Hugh's body will be received by his monastic community of Marmion Abbey on Friday, September 16, 2005 at 4:00 PM. Visitation will be from 4:00 PM until 9:00 PM in the Abbey Church on Butterfield Poad in Aurora. The Office of the Dead will be prayed at 6:30 PM.
Visitation will continue on Saturday, September 17, 2005 from 8:00 AM until the Funeral Mass. The Funeral mass will be celebrated in the Marmion Abbey Church at 10:00 AM with burial in the Abbey Cemetery immediately after the Mass.
