Tom is the son of Capt. Michael & Alice (née Britt) McGowan of Ringsend, Co. Dublin, Ireland.
In 1911 he emigrated to America with his brother Jack. His widowed father had left for America a few months earlier to be met by his brother John McGowan and sister Lizzie McCaffrey (Tom's uncle & aunt), who had immigrated years earlier. The following year Tom's young brothers Mike & Joe made the journey, followed by his sister Nance in 1914.
It was in 1914 that Tom married an Irish girl from Co. Louth, Anna Martin at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Manhattan, New York. They returned to Ireland that year on an extended honeymoon, but ended up staying due to the outbreak of World War I.
They settled in Dublin near his sisters Mrs. Elizabeth Mansfield & Mrs. Mary Alice Brown and his brother's Willie & Morgan. Tom & Anna raised 6 children in Dublin.
Tom got a job on the Guinness Brewery boats which were trading between London, Manchester and Dublin. He sailed with his Uncle Capt. Willie Grimley, the brother of Tom's mother Alice (née Britt-Grimley) McGowan. He subsequently became Chief Officer of the S.S. Guinness.
Home for Easter Sunday, Tom couldn't leave Dublin City after The Rising began and therefore was home when his daughter Mary was born during the midst of the heroic battle to free Ireland from her oppressive occupying invaders.
✞ Thomas McGowan is buried in his McGowan family plot at Glasnevin Cemetery. Buried with him is Anna, his wife of 51 years, their son Jack and daughters Mary & Alice.
