Oscar Burge was born in Kentucky in 1822; he died in 1900. His father, Beverly Brown Burge (1878-1863) was a soldier in Major Perkins Command, Virginia Militia, War of 1812. As a result of his military service, his father had a government land grant in Bates county, Missouri. Oscar's mother was Ann Stephen Jones Burge (1789-1844). Oscar made the long overland trip to the gold fields of California in 1850 and remained there for two years. He acquired a quantity of gold including a gold nugget worth $100 at that time. He returned to Kentucky by way of Cape Horn and soon after went to Bates County, Missouri where he took possession of his father's land grant. He sold the land and moved to Cooper County, Missouri settling seven miles southeast of Boonville where he developed a good farm of 150 acres and there spent the remainder of his days. Earlier in young manhood he married Elizabeth Miller who was born and raised in Cooper County, a daughter of pioneer parents. She was born on a farm south of Boonville in 1824 and departed this life in 1872, leaving children as follows: John, a farmer, southwest of Boonville; William who lives near Blackwater, Missouri; Robert P.; and Dora Burge, who lives in Kentucky. Oscar was married twice. After the death of his first wife he married a widow, Mrs. Williams, and they had two children, only one of which survived: Eldridge Burge, of Boonville.
