Crimean War Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Warrington, Lancashire, he served as a Private in the 7th Regiment of Foot, Royal Fusiliers, British Army. On the night December 19, 1854, Private Norman was placed as a single sentry some distance in front of the advanced sentries of an out-lying picquet in the White Horse Ravine, Crimea, a post of much danger and requiring great vigilance. The Russian picquet was posted about 300 yards to his front, when three Russian soldiers advanced under cover of the brush-wood for the purpose of reconnoitering. Private Norman single-handed took two of them prisoners without alarming the Russian picquet. For prestigious gallantry, he was invested with his Victoria Cross by Queen Victoria at Hyde Park on June 26, 1857 and later achieved the rank of Corporal. He died at age 64 in Salford, Lancashire.
