Virginia Heaton (Fouse) Ake, 91, Martinsburg, passed away Tuesday morning at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, after a heart attack.
She was born at home on the Fouse farm on Clover Creek, daughter of Adam Irving and Xenia (Heaton) Fouse. She married Denver K. Ake, who died in 2007.
Their four children are Donna Burkholder and companion, David Witmer, of Ephrata/Lancaster, Ken Ake and wife, Dianne, of Martinsburg, Kay Smith and husband, John, of Carrollton, Va., and Ruth Russell and husband, James, of Lexington, Ky.
Virginia greatly enjoyed her nine grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and four step-great-grandchildren. She leaves two sisters-in-law: Arlene Brubaker of Martinsburg and Freda Ake in Virginia.
Virginia was a 1939 graduate of Morrison Cove High School and studied nursing at Presbyterian Hospital in Philadelphia. Much of her married life was spent assisting her husband on the Ake farm on Piney Creek. Denver and Virginia moved to Martinsburg in 1976. She was employed for many years with PennDOT at the Hollidaysburg office and New Enterprise Stone & Lime Co. After she and her husband retired, they enjoyed traveling throughout the U.S., particularly in their motor home.
Virginia was raised in the Evangelical and Reformed Church tradition, both in Beavertown and Martinsburg. She was a member of Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg. She devoted her time to family, church activities, friends and the D. Merle Tipton VFW Post 43 Auxiliary, Martinsburg, of which she was a past president.
Friends will be received from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at John C. Bolger Funeral Home Inc., Martinsburg. A celebration service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013, at Memorial Church of the Brethren, Pastor Joel Nogle officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Cemetery after the service.
The family requests that those who wish to honor Virginia might do so through a donation to a charity of their choice.
