Former District Justice
Denver K. Ake, 85, of Oakdale Road, Martinsburg, died early Sunday, Jan. 7, 2007, at Nason Hospital, Roaring Spring, after a long illness.
A funeral was held Wednesday morning at the Memorial Church of the Brethren, Martinsburg, by Pastors Ervin L. Huston and Floyd H. Mitchell.
Burial with military honors were in Fairview Cemetery, Martinsburg.
He was born Feb. 28, 1921, in North Woodbury Township, a son of Charles H. and Bertha M. (Replogle) Ake.
He married Virginia H. Fouse on Jan. 20, 1945, in Harvard, Neb.
He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Donna Burkholder of Ephrata, Kay Smith and husband John of Enola, Cumberland County, and Ruth Russell and husband James of Lexington, Ky.; a son, B. Kenneth and wife Dianne of Martinsburg; nine grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; five· great-grandchildren; and four. step-greatgrandchildren.
He also is survived by a sister, Arlene Brubaker of Martinsburg; and a brother, Charles, of Springfield, Va.
He was a 1939 graduate of Morrison Cove High School, Martinsburg, and attended Dickinson College, Carlisle.
He was an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II, serving on a B-29 crew, flying 13 missions over Japan. He attained the rank of sergeant.
Mr. Ake retired as a district justice at the Roaring Spring office in 1988 after 18 years of service. Prior to that he served as director of Veterans Affairs of Blair County at Hollidaysburg for six years. Previously he owned and operated a dairy farm in North Woodbury Township, near
Martinsburg, for 17 years.
As a young man he became a licensed private pilot, specializing in acrobatics and stunt flying.
He was a member of the Memorial Church of the Brethren; was a member and past commander of D. Merl Tipton Post L1 3, VFW; was a former board member and past president of Morrisons Cove Memorial Park; was a former school director for the Spring Cove School District; was past president of the Martinsburg Community Guidance Council; and was a past board president of the Martinsburg Community Housing Corp.
The John C. Bolger Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
