Much Beloved Woman Dead.
- Miss Catharine Elizabeth Hurkamp, eldest daughter of the late John G. Hurkamp, died at her residence in this city on Tuesday morning at 1 o'clock, after a short illness. Miss Hurkamp was well known to all of our citizens and greatly beloved by all who knew her. Her cheerful, sunny disposition, cheery greeting and many sterling qualities of head and heart endeared her to all acquaintances. Those who were privileged to call her friend will feel their loss more keenly, for she was of that open, honest, loyal disposition that made her friendship worth the having. She will be greatly missed in social circles, for her fine voice and natural aptitude for such things made her prominent in the concerts, dramatic performances and other social entertainmunts, and she was always sure of a warm, welcome and generous applause when she appeared in public at the performances given here for charitable or other purposes. Her generosity and charity were of that large measure that freely responded to the wants of those suffering or in need. Since her father's death, Miss Hurkamp had assisted in the management of his large enterprises and had come to be recognized as quite a business woman in this community, and to her may be most fittingly applied the words of King Lemuel -- "Strength and honor are her clothing, and she shall rejoice in time to come. She openeth her mouth with wisdom, and in her tongue is the law of kindness." The funeral services were held at the Presbyterian Church on the afternoon of Wednesday at 5:80 o'clock by Rev. A.P. Saunders, and were attended by our people of all classes and conditions of life. The following gentlemen acted as pallbearers : A.D. Tapacott, W.H. Richards, Dr. Geo. H. Chewning, Dr. A.C. Doggett, Duff Green, A.K. Phillips, R.I. Taylor, and H. B.Lane. The interment was made in the family lot In the cemetery here. So beautiful and numerous were the floral offerings that she seemed to sleep upon a bed of roses. (Fredericksburg) The Free Lance - July 19, 1895.
