Mrs. Marion Melton, 89, died at Winnfield General Hospital Thursday at 5:30 a.m. after a long illness. Funeral services are to be held Friday at 2:30 p.m. at Southern Funeral Home chapel, with Dr. W. L. Holcomb, pastor of the First Baptist Church of which she was a member, officiating.

Burial will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery, under direction of Southern Funeral Home.

Mrs. Melton was the former Miss Dona McIlwain of Atlanta Community, and was married to Mr. Melton in 1889, almost 70 years ago. She and her husband have lived in Winnfield since 1930 when they moved here from Atlanta.

In addition to her husband Mrs. Melton is survived by three sons, Claud Melton, Fletcher Melton, and Clifford Melton, all of Winnfield; four daughters, Mrs. R. K. Garrett of Winnfield, Mrs. W. J. Key of Overton, Texas, Mrs. Wiley Page of Winnfield, and Mrs. J. M. Tarver of Winnfield; 23 grandchildren and 35 great grandchildren.

Pallbearers will be grandsons, Hershel Page, David Melton, Roger Melton, Julius Tarver, Howard Tarver, and Wilburn Garrett.

Gravesite Details

Mrs. Melton's headstone gives her DOB as Jan. 2, 1870, which agrees w/ her obituary. However, the 1870 and 1880 Winn Parish census records reported her age as 2 & 12 years respectively.
