The funeral service for Mary Van Bruggen, 90, Valley City, ND, formerly of Marion, ND, will be 10:30 a.m., Friday, February 1, 2008 at North Marion Reformed Church, rural Marion. Rev. Paul Peterson will officiate and burial will be in the North Marion Reformed Cemetery. She died on Monday, January 28, 2008 at the Sheyenne Care Center in Valley City under the care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Visitation will be Thursday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City and will continue an hour before the service at the church on Friday.
Mary Bremer was born on February 5, 1917 in Melvin, IA, the daughter of Henry C. and Sadie (Dykstra) Bremer. As a young girl she moved with her family near Rock Rapids, IA where she attended school. They later moved to a farm near Ypsilanti, ND, where she continued her schooling. After a time they moved near Marion, ND.
On March 7, 1940, she married William Van Bruggen at her parents’ farm. The farmed north of Marion until 1988 when they moved to Valley City, ND. William died on July 30, 1997.
She was a member of North Marion Reformed Church and their Sunshine Circle and Ladies Aid. Mary was a loving mother and grandmother. She will be remembered as a faithful letter writer and as an encourager.
Mary is survived by her son Clarence (Sharon) Van Bruggen of Marion, ND; daughters, Henrietta (Costi) Baramki of Huntington Beach, CA, Sylvia (George) Free of Boulder, CO, and Esther (Edwin) Johnson of Tiffin, IA; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; brothers, Jeppe (Charlotte) Bremer of Geneva, MN, John (Lu) Bremer of Kent, WA, and Sidney (Audrey) Bremer of Albert Lea, MN; sisters, Alice Flim of Albert Lea, MN, Florence Thompson of New Richland, MN and Sadie (Edward) DeJong of Arizona City, AZ; and a sister-in-law, Rena Van Bruggen of Valley City.
She was preceded in death by her husband; brothers, Henry Bremer and Peter Bremer; and a sister, Tillie Oldenkamp.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be directed to North Marion Reformed Church of a charity of choice.
