Joe Vest Dies at 67; Former Baseball 'Pro'

Joe Vest, 67, of 1107 West Second street, a former employee of Standard Oil Co., died at 8 p.m. Thursday.

He was a former baseball player, having been affiliated with the old Mississippi Valley league. He also was active in promoting softball teams.

He was born in Cambridge, Neb., on July 23, 1890, but had been a resident of Ottumwa most of his life. He married Olive L. Bush in Ottumwa on December 20, 1907. She preceded him in death April 1, 1952.

Survivors include four sons, Joseph Jr., Kenneth, Eugene and Donald Vest, all of Ottumwa; three daughters, Mrs. Gretchen Coltrain, Mrs. Mary Nevins and Mrs. Helen Andrews, all of Ottumwa; 22 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; a brother, Frank Vest, Buffalo, Iowa, and a half-brother, Alex Knight, Buffalo.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by two sons, three daughters, a brother, three sisters and a half-sister.

Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Monday at the Johnson funeral chapel, in charge of J.E. Matthews of the Ward Street Gospel hall. Burial will be in Shaul cemetery.
