Christiane Dorothea Johanne Harning (known by her 2nd given name "DORATHEA") was born in Kussow, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (now part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany) on March 19, 1835 to Johann Joachim Wilhelm Harning and Friederica Magdalena Dorothea (aka Luise) Schroeder. She was the fourth living child, and 2nd daughter of her parents. Her mother Luise died when she was only 12 years old, on November 21, 1847.

In 1854, at the age of 19, along with the rest of the Harning family, Dorathea emigrated to the United States - arriving in New York City on August 4, 1854 aboard the SS Marchioness of Queensbury from Hamburg. They continued on to Detroit, Michigan where they intended to make their home.

Unfortunately, Asiatic Cholera was raging in Detroit - and Dorathea's brother Christian and father Johann succumbed to the disease very shortly after their arrival. Youngest sister Christine also died about a year later, on November 28, 1855. Life was very tough on Dorathea and her surviving siblings without their father. Older sister Louise Harning married right away (in late 1854) to Heinrich Engel. Older brother Johann married on February 28, 1856 to Caroline Leesch (a cousin of Heinrich Engel). Dorathea's last sibling Friederika was still underage - but she eventually married Christoph Engel (brother of Heinrich Engel) in 1862. The Harning family had met the Engel family at some point during their journey from Mecklenburg to the US, and had become close.

For her part, Dorathea married on May 10, 1856, at the age of 21, to another German immigrant named Herman Mueller (also known as Helmuth Miller). Helmuth was a shoemaker. They also made their home just to the west of the city of the Detroit, in Springwells Township (this area is now part of Detroit).

According to their death certificates, Dorathea and Helmuth had a total of 14 children, of which only 7 survived into adulthood. At this time, the details about only 9 of these children are known:

1857 - Herman
1859 - Bernhardt, aka Ben
1861 - Henry
1865 - Emilia
1867 - Hugo
1869 - Louis
1871 - Dora (died 1871)
1874 - Augusta
1876 - baby girl (stillborn)

Husband Helmuth died at the age of 65 on July 4, 1899 in Springwells Township. Dorathea passed away almost a year later on May 17, 1900, also in Springwells Township. Like her husband, she was also 65 years of age.

Helmuth and Dorathea are buried in Woodmere Cemetery, in Section A, lot 379 SW-1/4. On this lot are also buried their daughter-in-law Wilhelmine (1st wife of Bernhardt), and 9 of their grandchildren who died in infancy/childhood. There is only one large monument on this plot; there are no individual headstones.
