Christine Harning was born in Kussow, in the Grand Duchy of Mecklenburg-Schwerin (now part of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany) on June 22, 1847 to Johann Joachim Wilhelm Harning and Friederica Magdalena Dorothea (aka Luise) Schroeder. Her mother Luise died a few months later, on November 21, 1847.

In 1854, at the age of 8, along with the rest of the Harning family, Christine emigrated to the United States - arriving in New York City on August 4, 1854 aboard the SS Marchioness of Queensbury. They continued on to Detroit, Michigan where they had intended to make their home.

Unfortunately, Christine's brother Christian and father Johann succumbed to Asiatic Cholera very shortly after arriving in Detroit. It was very tough on Christine and her siblings John, Louise, Dorathea and Friederika without their father, just having moved to a foreign country!

Sadly, Christine also died of Asiatic Cholera a year later - on November 28, 1855.
