Ingulf 'Gin' Harold Opdahl was born 21 Feb 1912 in Westerheim Twp., Lyon Co., Minnesota near Minneota, to Iver & Hilda (Christiansen) Opdahl. He was the 3rd child of 10. Isabell, Henry, Alfred, Clarence, Elmer, Murial, Lyle, Donald, & Gerald were his siblings.The Opdahls moved to Litchville in Barnes Co. ND to farm.Gin was a Captain Group Leader in the C.C.C. and was supervising the work on building the Hanson Dam east of Dazey, ND on the Sheyenne River, when he met his wife.Gin married Eleanor LaVerne Martinson, daughter of Mike & Lula (Tharaldson) Martinson of Dazey, ND. She was a teacher at the Litchville school. They married on 12 Jun 1940 in Chicago, IL. They had been married 58 years when Gin died on 18 Oct 1998 in Torrance, CA.Gin was an 18 handicap golfer and a 172 average bowler. He belonged to a mens organization called the "Sons of Retirement". Gin was active in booking group tours for the men and their wives, which took them all over the US and Europe, including to Norway where both of their ancestors were born.Gin worked for Firestone Tire Company in Los Angeles until his retirement. Gin and Eleanor had moved from Chicago to Inglewood, CA in 1943. He had been a steel worker in Chicago.They retired in 1975 and moved to Pleasanton, CA. In 1997 they moved back to So. CA to Torrance where Gin died. Eleanor broke both hips and was confined to Regency Oaks Nursing Care in Long Beach until she died in Feb 2005. Gin was preceded in death by both parents, and all but 2 of his siblings. He was survived by his wife, Eleanor, a son, Dale Lowell (Donna) Opdahl of Redondo Beach, CA, a daughter, Linda Elleyn (Donald) Bourdeau of Lake Forest, CA, 4 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren. As per his request, there was no funeral or memorial service. Gin was cremated and his ashes scattered in the mountains north of L.A. as were his wishes.
