HER AUTO-BIOGRAHY

Ruby's first husband was Herbert A. Patton (married June 11, 1938; no children) and three years and four days after he died on Dec. 13, 1974 Ruby married John M. Lester on Dec. 17, 1977; he died July 20, 1982 (no children).

"A Resume of Ruby Wirsig Patton" written by her:
"After graduation from high school at Kearney Nebr. [on May 26, 1922; commencement exercises were held the same day at the Opera house] I worked for my 2 year primary teaching credential, attending Kearney Normal School, Columbia Univ., N. Y. and The Univ. of Nebr.
The first teaching was in kindergarten and first grade in, namely, Taylor, Nebr.
After 2 yrs. in Sargent Nebr. I received a letter from Sup't Staley of Hastings Nebr. asking me to apply for a teaching position in Hastings. I did, teaching there 12 years. At the same time furthering my education in order to receive my Bachelor of Science degree.
A letter from Beulah Wirsig invited me to spend half of my last summer school with her and family in the High Sierras of Calif. where she was matron over some boys that were spending their summer vacation there and where I met my future husband Herbert Patton. I still taught one more yr. in Hastings meeting Herb in Long Beach Calif. where we were married June 11, 1938.
Since Herb was employed by the oil industry we moved from Long Beach to Bakersfield, Calif., to Coalinga, Woodland and finally to Redding, Calif. where we lived while Herb was working on the Keswick Dam.
War was declared and there was a great influx of people going to Richmond, Calif. to work in one of the 3 ship yeards there. Herb being one. I felt I should be doing something for the war effort so applied for nursery school work in child care centers which were under the city school system.
My director wanted me to supervise the Peres Nursury School which I did several months, then she wanted me to become supervisor of music over all the 8 nursery child care centers setting up the music program. I enjoyed the work very much but did not have my summers free and each year we had to wait for legislature to pass the bill to continue the child care centers. In the meantime I took extra courses at Berkely [sic] and San Francisco State so was ordered to teach in Richmond City schools where I taught at the Woodrow Wilson School.
Herb and I retired in 1966 and moved to Helena, Calif in the mts. where fishing was good and the air pure. His health began to fail so we moved out of the mts. to my present address. Herb passed away [Dec.13, 1974] one year after building our new home in Visalia. So now I'm trying to keep busy with yard work."
