On 29 Aug 1881 in the Catholic Church of Strakonice, where his bride's family lived, Joseph married Mary Ann Aubrecht. She was the 5th of 8 children of Vaclav (Wenzel) & Marie (Papez) Aubrecht.
On 8 Apr 1887 Joseph left Bremen, Germany on the Westernland. He arrived in Philadelphia on 21 Apr 1887. Joseph continued on to Detroit. Later that year Mary and their children Mary Ann and Karel joined him. While no other Carda's came from Strakonice to Michigan in 1854 a possible Mary Rossa and her husband Jacob Kuderle came to Detroit.
Mary (Rossa) Kuderly, was godmother for nearly all of the American born Carda children, [at least 5], at the Wenceslaus Church. (More research needs to be done to validate Joseph's Bohemian blood tie to this Rossa/Kuderle family.
Joseph & Mary had a total of 9 known children.

After arriving in Detroit the family bought a home on the lower west side and grew quickly over the next 10 years. They were close and happy.
This would not last. Joseph worked delivering bread by a horse driven wagon. One day when he was not feeling well on a day off he was asked to fill in for another absent worker. With the large family the extra money was always needed. Joseph went to work delivering bread. He was ill and tired and fell forward. The wagon rolled over him and crushed him. Joseph was taken to a nearby Doctor. Nothing could be done, within an hour Joseph died.
Note, Joseph's daughter Mary recalls her father talking about Henry Ford nearby test driving his mechanical contraptions and saying he (Ford) was going to kill himself. Tragically Joseph would be killed and in a horse driven wagon.
After his death Mary and the family moved nearby to a smaller house and the family kept together.
Joseph's son Frank and granddaughter Florence Ingham are also buried close to one another in this cemetery.
