Nick was part Cherokee Indian. He served in the Army during WWI receiving mustard gas poisoning that effected his health the rest of his life.

Nick bought and sold fruits and vegetables for a living. Their last years were spent in the house Nick built in Rocklin, just north of Sacramento. Nick died Jan 23, 1960 and Ethel on March 10, 1967.
