Laura May Abrams, 82, passed away September 4, 2013 at University of Colorado Hospital after a sudden illness.

Laura was born in Bijou Hills, South Dakota to the parents of Clifford and Ethel Abrams, then moved with her family to Interior, SD in 1950 where she worked for the Badlands National Park Service and helped her folks run the small Peace Pipe Cafe in Interior. She also attended colleges in Wyoming and South Dakota, where she obtained a Master of Fine Arts Degree.

Laura moved to Rapid City in 1980 after the deaths of her parents, Cliff and Ethel Abrams, and worked several seasons at Mt. Rushmore National Monument.

Having never married and being fiercely independent, Laura involved herself in self-education, mother earth, gardening, canning, singing in the Senior Choir, and working part-time for the Rushmore Civic Center. She enjoyed attending local arts and crafts festivals, where she sold her art work, jams and jellies.

She is survived by one sister, Dolores "Dolly" Steele Steenberg of Rapid City; one brother, Larry Abrams of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Laura was preceded in death by her parents, Cliff and Ethel Abrams; Baby Jean and Florence Quartullo; and a younger brother, Bruce Dean "BD" Abrams of Rapid City.

Memorial Services will be held at 4:00 pm on Sunday, September 15, 2013 at Kirk Funeral Home, with Pastor Brent Woodard officiating.
